A feasibility study realized in 1985 by Scéno Plus demonstrates the viability of a Community Arts Centre in Gatineau. Once the financial plan completed by the City of Gatineau, Scéno Plus is appointed designer of the 650-seat multidisciplinary theatre, and of the exhibition room also part of the Maison de la Culture project. From its inauguration in 1992, the theatre popularity exceeds all expectations. The clientele is such that the City of Gatineau decides to extend the Maison de la Culture allowing the capacity of the Theatre to increase to 852 seats.
Outstanding features
In the Theatre, the arrangement of the seats at balcony level is ingeniously modified so as to increase its capacity without widening the space. On the balcony, additional rows of seats are added in the rear.
The lobby is also expanded and the installation of a suspended mezzanine emphasizes the new height of the space. Additionally, the lobby is now equipped with all the necessary infrastructures required to hold exhibitions.
