Le Gesù

Congrégation des Jésuites
Montréal, Québec, Canada

  • Inauguration : 1991
  • Cost : C$ 1.6 M (plus C$800,000 for equipment)
  • Type : Theatres & Concert Halls
  • Capacity : 427 seats

The Gesù theatre, built in 1865, was one of Montreal’s first showrooms and certainly among the city’s most famous venues. When the Jesuit Fathers decided to renovate, they hoped to make it a center for creativity and a place that would attract young amateur and professional artists through the sense of “animation” that a showroom provides.

Outstanding features

The space occupied by the original theatre (about 900 seats) was completely redesigned. There is now an Italian-style 427-seat theatre plus two conference rooms that accommodate 100 and 75 respectively, and two workshop spaces.

Scéno Plus worked within the tight constraints imposed by the existing building (in the basement of the Gesù church), a new theatrical concept, and the design of the theatrical equipment systems.
